[Chosun Biz, February 7, 2025] Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 7th that it has signed a Strategic Cooperation Agreement(SCA) with the ammonia-based carbon-free power generation system specialist 'Amogee' to develop next-generation propulsion technology utilizing ammonia. The company plans to focus its capabilities on the development of next-generation ammonia power packs optimized for large vessels.
To respond to the post-liquefied natural gas (LNG) era, Samsung Heavy Industries is developing products to provide total value chain solutions starting from offshore ammonia production to utilization. Last year, at the International Shipbuilding and Marine Exhibition, it received major classification certification for the ammonia fuel cell-powered very large ammonia carrier (VLAC) and the world’s first ‘floating blue ammonia production facility.’
The two companies view this technology agreement as an opportunity to lead in eco-friendly vessel propulsion technology. Kim Kyung-hee, head of the management support division at Samsung Heavy Industries, said, “With this technology agreement, Samsung Heavy Industries will accelerate its competitiveness in the eco-friendly sector of shipbuilding and marine industries” and added, “We will strive to advance the era of carbon-free maritime transport through collaboration from product development to verification and application.”
