[KR Press release/ September 19, 2024] KR (Korean Register) recently awarded Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) an Approval in Principle (AiP) for their innovative “9,300 TEU Ammonia-Fueled Container Ship” at Gastech 2024. As the maritime industry shifts toward stricter decarbonization goals, ammonia is emerging as a viable zero-carbon fuel option.
This new vessel design not only incorporates the latest advancements in ammonia propulsion technology but also features specialized fuel tanks, supply systems, ventilation, and gas detection systems tailored to the unique properties of ammonia.
While ammonia is cost-effective and efficient, its high toxicity and corrosive nature necessitate rigorous safety assessments and a specially engineered propulsion system.
KR's approval confirms that SHI’s design meets classification rules and international regulations, ensuring the integrity and safety of the entire system. This development represents a significant stride in the transition toward sustainable maritime fuel solutions.
