[KOGAS Press Release/ July 10, 2025] On July 10, Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) announced the deployment of automatic welding technology for the first time in Korea’s natural gas piping construction. This move marks a major step toward modernizing infrastructure and enhancing safety in the country’s expanding energy supply network.
KOGAS initially introduced automatic welding last year to address a shrinking pool of skilled welders and to reduce high-risk manual labor at construction sites. The new technology has already demonstrated significant benefits in construction quality, safety, and cost efficiency.
Building on this success, KOGAS developed detailed technical standards and operation manuals, applying them to a live construction site in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province. The company is now preparing to implement the same technology in its upcoming pipeline project in Chungcheongnam-do Province this August, with plans to scale it across the country—including future developments in the Seoul metropolitan area.
In parallel, KOGAS is investing in further technological advancement, including new welding techniques and related patents, tailored to real-world construction conditions.
A KOGAS official emphasized the broader impact of the innovation: “By integrating automatic welding, we expect to dramatically reduce workplace accidents and boost the overall efficiency of natural gas infrastructure projects. We remain committed to ensuring a safe and stable supply of natural gas through continuous innovation and technology-driven progress.”
