[HD KSOE Press release/ April 4, 2024] In a move toward embracing eco-conscious maritime solutions, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Marine Engineering (KSOE) conducted a ceremony on April 7 to inaugurate the "Marine Innovative Decarbonization R&D Facility." This state-of-the-art facility is aimed at proactively addressing the evolving landscape of eco-friendly shipping.
Unlike previous facilities which focused on verifying specific functionalities such as LNG fuel supply and re-liquefaction, the newly established carbon-neutral technology demonstration facility is poised to showcase the entire cargo transportation process, from loading to operation and unloading. This comprehensive approach enables the assessment of the operational efficiency of the entire cargo operation system integrated with carbon reduction technologies.
The initial focus of this demonstration facility centers on liquefied carbon dioxide carriers. Specifically, it will assess the functionality of the re-liquefaction facility and dry ice production within the cargo hold of these carriers, following an order secured last year.
Looking ahead, KSOE has ambitious plans to broaden the scope of ship types and technologies subjected to demonstration by 2026. These include ammonia carriers, methanol propulsion ships, multi-gas carriers (handling carbon dioxide, ammonia, LPG), hybrid electric propulsion vessels, and hydrogen carriers, all geared towards fostering the development of future eco-friendly ships.
Commenting on these endeavors, a source from KSOE stated, "Different technologies are being developed as environment-friendly regulations are strengthened, but securing the reliability of these technologies is also important. We plan to thoroughly verify the stability of our own future technologies and lead the future eco-friendly ship market."
