[KOGAS Press release/ July 27, 2024] The Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) has announced a significant breakthrough in green hydrogen production with the successful operation of a 1MW Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) water electrolysis system on Jeju Island. This marks the first time such technology has been deployed in South Korea.

The achievement aligns with the Korean government’s carbon neutrality objectives. Since joining the "Green Hydrogen Production and Storage System Technology Development Project" consortium organized by the Jeju Energy Corporation in 2020, KOGAS has been developing the necessary systems. The completion of the PEM water electrolysis system in Jeju's demonstration complex represents a major step forward in the initiative.

Beginning in July 2024, the system is set to produce 18 kilograms of hydrogen per hourequivalent to the daily needs of one hydrogen busand will supply this hydrogen to the Jeju Hamdeok green hydrogen charging station. This effort supports Jeju’s goal of becoming a carbon-free island.

KOGAS’s successful implementation of the MW-class PEM water electrolysis system not only advances its operational technology but also supports the planned deployment of 30 hydrogen fuel cell buses by 2025. The company is collaborating with other stakeholders in the demonstration complex to achieve this target.

A KOGAS official stated, "We are methodically building our hydrogen business to align with the government's 2050 carbon neutrality goals. This project will enhance our green hydrogen production capabilities and support sustainable growth in the evolving energy sector.”
