[Safety4sea/September 20, 2024] Hanwha Ocean showcased a cutting-edge zero-carbon vessel at the “Gastech 2024” event in Houston, USA, furthering its commitment to maritime decarbonization.

At the event, Hanwha Ocean hosted an “LNG Carrier User Forum” aimed at shipowners and classification societies, where they introduced their next-generation zero-carbon propulsion LNG carrier, “Ocean 1.”

The “Ocean 1” is designed for fully zero-carbon propulsion, powered by an ammonia gas turbine-based electric system, eliminating the reliance on fossil fuels. It is also capable of operating on LNG and mixed fuels, with the flexibility to integrate future technologies like fuel cells and batteries.

Additionally, Hanwha Ocean presented the use of high-manganese steel (MCTIB) for LNG fuel tanks. This material, which has been used in ultra-large crude oil carriers and container ships, is expected to enhance transport efficiency by reducing boil-off gas (BOG) when used in cargo holds.

Hanwha Engine revealed a remote engine monitoring system that can detect engine faults and predict parts replacement cycles. By integrating with Hanwha Ocean’s smart ship solution, this system will enable real-time monitoring of engine conditions.

Hanwha Power Systems presented an eco-friendly alternative to traditional fossil fuel engines with ammonia gas turbines, offering a solution to help existing ships comply with carbon emission regulations while maintaining cost efficiency.

A Hanwha Ocean official described the zero-carbon propulsion LNG carrier as an innovative, eco-friendly breakthrough leading the industry, emphasizing the company’s goal of strengthening partnerships with affiliates to become a global leader in marine decarbonization solutions.
