[Safety4sea/ January 29, 2023] Maersk has welcomed the world’s first large (16,000 TEUs) methanol-enabled container vessel, Ane Mærsk, the first of the company’s 18 large methanol-enabled vessels scheduled for delivery between 2024 and 2025.

According to Maersk, the innovative design of “Ane Mærsk” places the bridge and accommodation at the front of the vessel, ensuring fuel-efficient operations. The company also highlighted that this is the second methanol-enabled container vessel globally, after “Laura Maersk“, and is set to enter service on the AE7 string connecting Asia and Europe in early February.

The vessel’s maiden voyage will use green methanol, and Maersk is actively working on sourcing and bunkering solutions for its entire methanol-enabled fleet in 2024-2025.

The container ship was christened at the shipyard of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea. The vessel is named after Ane Mærsk Mc-Kinney Uggla, the Chair of the A.P. Moller Foundation and A.P. Moller Holding.
