[KOLBIA/ April 25, 2023] Samsung Heavy Industries has formed a partnership with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) and Denmark's Seaborg Technologies to develop floating nuclear power plants.
These power plants will use Seaborg Technologies' innovative compact molten salt reactor technology(CSMR) and will be installed on modular barges capable of delivering between 200MWe to 800MWe of power. The consortium's first project is expected to be a 200MWe power barge.
The partnership leverages KHNP's expertise in nuclear power generation, SHI's offshore construction expertise, and Seaborg's innovative CSMR technology, making it well-positioned to meet the growing demand for clean and reliable energy.
This partnership marks a significant milestone for floating nuclear solutions, with each 200MWe of generation capacity expected to save over 26 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions over its 24-year lifetime compared to a coal-fired power plant.
