[Yonhap/July 18, 2025] Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has announced a major achievement in maritime carbon reduction technology. On July 18th, the company revealed the successful demonstration of its Onboard Carbon Capture and Storage (OCCS) system, developed in partnership with HMM, Panasia, and Korea Register (KR).

The OCCS system is designed to capture and liquefy carbon dioxide (CO) emitted during ship operations, preventing it from entering the atmosphere. This groundbreaking technology was installed last July on a 2,200 TEU container ship operated by HMM, where it has undergone continuous monthly performance testing.

SHI highlighted the demonstration’s significance, noting that it proves both the technological viability and commercial potential of OCCS. It also lays the groundwork for a decarbonized value chain spanning shipbuilding, shipping, and clean energy production.

In two key milestones, the system successfully captured liquefied COwith a purity of 99.9% in January and May. This captured COwas then repurposed as a raw material for producing eco-friendly methanol, a promising alternative fuel for ships.

“OCCS will be used as a sustainable energy source for green fuel production and will play a vital role in achieving carbon neutrality in the shipping sector,” an SHI representative stated. “We aim to lead the global OCCS market through continued collaboration across the shipbuilding, shipping, and equipment industries.”
