[The Guru/ July 5, 2023] SK Shipping has sold its aframax tanker, marking its departure from the oil tanker sector. The sale is expected to accelerate the process of selling the tanker business division, which is owned by the major shareholder, private equity fund Hahn & Co.
According to industry sources and tanker brokers on the 5th, SK Shipping sold the 105,272 DWT tanker "Pro Triumph" (built in 2009) built by Hyundai Heavy Industries to a Dubai-based company. The vessel, which is 14 years old, was sold for $39 million (approximately KRW 51 billion) due to its age and obsolescence.
The LR2 tanker that was sold this time is a liquid cargo carrier with a pure cargo capacity of over 80,000 DWT but less than 160,000 DWT.
In 2006, SK Shipping ordered two aframax tankers from Hyundai Heavy Industries. One of them is the "Pro Triumph" and the other is its sister ship, the "Pro Alliance" (built in 2008). The newbuilding cost of each vessel was reported to be $65 million (approximately KRW 84.4 billion) at that time.
