[KOGAS press release/ October 30, 2023] In a groundbreaking development, Korea LNG Bunkering Inc. (KOLB), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Korea Gas Corporation(KOGAS), has marked a significant milestone by completing the first Simultaneous Operations (SIMOPS) LNG bunkering in Korea.
This historic event unfolded on October 28, showcasing the inaugural LNG bunkering vessel of the nation, named "Blue Whale," equipped with the indigenous KC-2 cargo design.
The "Blue Whale" received LNG from the KOGAS Tongyeong production base. Utilizing a Ship-to-Ship (STS) transfer method, approximately 1,000 tons of LNG were efficiently transported to H-line Shipping's bulk carrier "HL-Echo," currently undergoing unloading procedures at the raw material pier of Gwangyang Steelworks.
SIMOPS, a crucial facet of LNG bunkering operations, involves supplying LNG fuel to ships while they are in the process of unloading cargo. This strategic approach significantly reduces additional berthing time and associated costs related to fuel supply. Notable instances of SIMOPS LNG bunkering have been observed globally in ports such as Helsinki, Amsterdam, Singapore, and Shanghai.
The seamless execution of this operation was made possible through collaborative efforts from various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Yeosu Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries, H-Line Shipping, POSCO, and the Korean Register. The unwavering commitment to safety and coordinated cooperation ensured the successful completion of this historic SIMOPS LNG bunkering operation in Korea.
