[Korea Gas News/July 3, 2024] On the 1st, Samsung Heavy Industries held a ceremony at the "Korea Made" shipyard in Mokpo, celebrating the completion of the "Onboard Carbon Capture and Storage (OCCS)" system. Developed in collaboration with HMM, Panasia, and the Korean Register, this pure domestic technology is hailed as the world's largest OCCS, capable of capturing, liquefying, and storing up to 1 ton of carbon dioxide per hour and 24 tons per day on ships.
Since April of last year, the consortium, comprising Samsung Heavy Industries and three other firms, has been diligently working on this project. They formed a joint working group and embarked on comprehensive research, including detailed design and technology effectiveness evaluations.
The demonstration phase involves Samsung Heavy Industries and Panasia showcasing the OCCS's carbon dioxide collection, liquefaction, and storage systems on 2100 TEU-class container ships currently operated by HMM. HMM, in turn, oversees facility operation and stability evaluations.
Through this initiative, the consortium aims to gather crucial insights into carbon dioxide capture, liquefaction performance verification, real-time maritime operational data, and the operational aspects of OCCS.
Looking ahead, Samsung Heavy Industries plans to integrate OCCS into future large-scale vessels and actively explore its application in developing liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO₂) carriers. This move underscores their commitment to advancing sustainable shipping solutions and environmental stewardship.
