[Hanwha Ocean Press release/ February 14, 2024] Hanwha Ocean introduces an eco-friendly and economically viable shipping solution catering to shipowners' needs. Their recent development focuses on a cutting-edge technology to monitor carbon emissions, ensuring compliance with environmental standards while enhancing operational efficiency.

The newly devised Carbon Intensity Indicator(CII) monitoring smart ship technology is a milestone achievement by Hanwha Ocean. It accurately measures carbon dioxide emissions during ship operations, providing shipowners with a green operational strategy. This technology will be integrated into a fleet of ultra-large ammonia carriers, recently commissioned by Hanwha Ocean.

The CII serves as a crucial index, evaluating carbon emissions based on operational data such as fuel consumption and distance traveled. It aligns with the eco-friendly regulations set by the International Maritime Organization, which have been in effect since last year. Ships weighing 5,000 tons or more annually receive a grading from A to E based on their carbon dioxide emissions. Continuous low grades, particularly D or E, lead to operational restrictions until improvement plans are implemented and recertified.

Hanwha Ocean's innovation extends further with the integration of this monitoring technology into HS4, their proprietary smart ship platform. This integration enables automatic CII calculations for vessels in operation, along with predictive assessments of their current and future ratings. Additionally, the platform offers optimized sailing recommendations, including ideal speeds and routes to minimize carbon emissions. This comprehensive eco-friendly operational solution aims to enhance shipowners' satisfaction, especially with the integration of various Energy Saving Devices (ESD) like rotorsails, harnessing wind power to conserve fuel.

An official from Hanwha Ocean emphasized their commitment to developing technologies that effectively address stringent environmental regulations. They aim to further delight shipowners by leveraging Hanwha Ocean's unparalleled eco-friendly advancements.

Furthermore, Hanwha Ocean is actively incorporating additional eco-friendly technologies, such as the Air Lubrication System (ALS) and Shaft Generator Motor (SGM), into shipbuilding processes. These initiatives not only promote economic operation but also facilitate compliance with environmental regulations, underscoring Hanwha Ocean's dedication to sustainable shipping practices.
