[Yonhap/November 13, 2024] Samsung Heavy Industries has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) to collaborate on the production of green ammonia fuel, a cutting-edge eco-friendly energy solution. The agreement, signed on November 12, marks a significant step toward advancing green ammonia as a sustainable alternative fuel for the shipping industry.
Green ammonia, which is produced without carbon emissions, is gaining attention for its high energy density and advantages in transportation and storage. As the global shipping industry seeks alternatives to traditional fossil fuels, green ammonia is emerging as a promising option.
The two organizations plan to jointly develop technologies that can reduce the cost of green ammonia fuel production and create safe methods for using ammonia, which is typically toxic. KIER has already achieved a significant milestone by successfully synthesizing liquid ammonia at a low pressure of 50 bar or less and a temperature of 400°C or lower—an innovation that could significantly reduce production costs and energy consumption.
In addition, KIER is researching a collection and recycling technology aimed at preventing ammonia emissions during the fuel collection process, addressing both safety concerns and environmental impact. Samsung Heavy Industries will conduct empirical studies to explore the application of this new technology in shipping vessels.
A KIER official emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating, "Low-cost, clean ammonia production and utilization technologies are crucial to meeting International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations on greenhouse gas emissions. This collaboration will help drive the development of carbon-neutral ship technologies."
