[Safety4sea, Lloyd's List /October 17, 2025] HMM has ordered new vessels worth KRW 4 trillion (about $2.82 billion USD), including twelve 13,000 TEU sister ships and two VLCCs (Very Large Crude Carriers).

As informed, the 13,000 TEU container vessels, all LNG dual-fuelled ships, will be built by HD Hyundai Heavy and Hanhwa Ocean. Eight of the neopanamax containerships and the VLCCs will be built by HD Hyundai, while Hanwha Ocean will construct the remaining four boxships.

As decarbonization regulations from the IMO and EU continue to strengthen, LNG is viewed as one of the most readily deployable lower-emission fuels.

By adding these new LNG dual-fuelled vessels to its existing portfolio, which already includes methanol-powered containerships and LNG-powered vessels, HMM continues to strengthen its position in sustainable shipping.

To remind, in 2023, HMM had placed another major $1.2 billion order with Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries(HSHI) and HJ Shipbuilding and Construction(HJSC) for nine 9,000 TEU containerships powered by methanol dual-fuel engines.

The new VLCCs will also contribute to diversifying and reinforcing the company’s bulk fleet portfolio, the company noted in a statement. This move reflects HMM’s 2030 mid-to long-term strategy to secure a more flexible and future-ready fleet amid global market and regulatory shifts.
