[MOTIE Press release/ October 23, 2024] The Korean government is taking proactive steps to mitigate potential delays in the market launch of innovative products and services caused by certification and permission standards.
On October 23, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held its fourth extraordinary deliberation committee on industrial convergence regulations, where it granted a temporary exemption from existing regulations.
One of the key initiatives discussed was the urban gas utilization from boil-off gas (BOG) generated by LNG fuel-powered ships. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is spearheading this project by capturing BOG produced during the construction of LNG ships and repurposing it for use within its facilities.
Typically, during the commissioning of LNG-fueled ships, BOG is released into the atmosphere as part of tank pressure management, resulting from the natural evaporation of LNG fuel. However, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries plans to establish a boil-off gas treatment facility to convert this evaporated gas into a usable form similar to urban gas, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
This initiative is expected to enhance environmental sustainability by recycling what would otherwise be waste.
