[Korea Herald Economy/ December 25, 2023] ]Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 26th that it has won a total of 310.8 billion won for two Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs) from ship owners in Oceania. These ships are expected to be delivered sequentially to the ship owner by June 2027.
The deal has increased Samsung Heavy Industries' total sales to 28 vessels (6.8 billion U.S. dollars) this year. By type of ship, the deal includes ▷one FLNG (floating liquefied natural gas production facility) ▷ seven LNG (liquid natural gas) carriers ▷ 16 methanol dual fuel propulsion containers ▷ two crude oil carriers ▷ two VLACs. With this, the company has tentatively achieved 72 percent of its annual target of 9.5 billion dollars.
Ammonia (NH3) is a carbon-free fuel that does not contain carbon and does not emit carbon dioxide during combustion, and has recently attracted attention as an alternative fuel that can reduce carbon.
An official from Samsung Heavy Industries said, "As demand for ammonia in the future could lead to an increase in maritime transportation, orders for ammonia carriers are expected to gradually expand."
