[Yonhap/November 25, 2024] Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 25th that it has signed a construction contract worth a total of KRW 1.985 trillion with ship owners in Asia for the construction of four 16,000 TEU container ships. These vessels are scheduled to be delivered to the shipowners by December 2027.
This latest deal brings the total number of ships won by Samsung Heavy Industries to 33 so far this year, including LNG and ammonia carriers, amounting to approximately $6.8 billion. With this achievement, the company has reached 70% of its annual order target of $9.7 billion (13.6 trillion won).
As stricter environmental regulations are expected to drive demand for the replacement of aging ships, Clarkson Research recently forecasted that approximately 53 container ships with capacities exceeding 12,000 TEUs will be ordered annually from 2023 to 2027.
A representative from Samsung Heavy Industries commented, “We will focus on delivering eco-friendly ships to meet our order targets and contribute to a greener future.”
