[Yonhap/June 4, 2025] Hanwha Ocean Co., a major South Korean shipbuilder, said Wednesday it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Norway's ship classification society DNV to collaborate on fuel tank technology.

The MOU was signed during the Nor-Shipping 2025 conference, a biennial global maritime event, that began Monday and will run through Friday in Oslo, according to Hanwha Ocean.

The agreement focuses on advancing high manganese steel cargo tank independent type-B (MCTIB) technology, it added.

Under the partnership, Hanwha Ocean and DNV will work to increase the vapor pressure limit of MCTIB fuel tanks to optimize "cold ironing," a method that allows ships to use external electrical power while docked, reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency.

MCTIB technology helps reduce boil-off gas (BOG) and enhance transport efficiency in fuel tanks for very large crude carriers (VLCCs) and container ships.

In a separate move during the event, Hanwha Ocean also signed two additional MOUs with the Korean Register to jointly develop an eco-friendly, large-scale ammonia carrier.
